Unit 3:Mitosis Reflection

1) Essential Questions:

A) Why do we have the cell cycle and how does it work?

The matter of an organism having a cell cycle is to create new cells for new organism to be born.  Specifically, the importance of cell cycle is to delicate without cell cycle control, there will be high potential for tumorigenesis. Obviously, tumor cells are the worst nightmare for every organism as it spread all over your body, causing tissue damage till the organism can’t resist the pain, then death occurred. Particularly, the 3 importances of cell cycle are replacing dead cells, reproduction and the growth of an organism. Cell cycle works with mitosis and meiosis. For addiction, the cell cycle was divided into 3 stage, the interphase, the mitosis (M) phase, and cytokinesis. During interphase, the cells grow, it’s an preparation for mitosis, and duplicate its DNA. The next stage is mitosis, the duplicated chromosomes condense and attach to fibers that pull one copy of each chromosome to the opposite sides of the cell. The last stage of cell cycle is when the the nucleus divide into identical nuclei with the same amount of  chromosomes, creating an daughter cells that are genetically identical. If one of the stage is not properly done, the cell can’t go through the next stage.

B) Should we use embryonic stems cells for research?

Yes, because doing research on  embryonic stem cell offers new therapies. Researcher should be researching about embryonic stems cells as it encouraged the cells to transform into adult cells such as nerves, heart muscle, and insulin-producing cells. Furthermore, this type of stem cells give higher opportunity to heal  the organism whose struggling with the disease such as  Parkinson's Disease and Diabetes. There are 2 duties of embryonic stem cells to decide whether or not it’s worth it to research about embryonic cells, the first duty is to prevent or alleviate suffering and another duty is to respect the value of human life because rescuing organisms shows how we really care about every single life. No one deserve to be in the stage of suffering. But unluckily, both of these duties are not possible, to obtain embryonic stem cells, the early  embryo has to be destroyed. This means the duty of respecting the value of a human life is impossible. Embryonic stem cells destroying a potential of a human life. The reason of this, is to pass this stage to lead to the discovery of new medical treatments that would alleviate the suffering of many people. In my personal opinion, I think that we should use embryonic stems cells for research because many patients need help, this is the  only way to cure a patients with Parkinson's Disease or  Diabetes. However, an early embryo that has not yet implanted into the uterus does not have the psychological, emotional or physical properties that we don’t considered as  a being a person. When in fact, There’s no reason to be  protected and we can use it for the benefit of a person. We protected the actual human’s life.

2) How does this connect to the real world?

The information of  cell cycle is connected to the real world because every organism have to pass the process of cell cycle to grow and get ready for reproduction. The real world is full of organisms, producing new life with this only precious process. There are embryonic stems cells being used out there in the real world.

3) Copy and paste some piece of evidence from the unit (Mitosis poster, assignment etc)

4) Meiosis and mitosis  was difficult because I found myself having difficulties remembering all the description of what’s happening in each stage of meiosis and mitosis.
