Unit 5: Exploring Expository Texts and Open Inquiry Projects.

  • Essential Questions:

    • What do you notice you do when reading expository texts? How does this differ from when you read narratives?

    • Reading expository text is purposely inform the reader in knowledges and facts. When ever I was reading an expository text, I will notice it with its educational and formal text form. Mostly narratives are based on expressing emotions and this is why both of them are different. Particularly,  I also notice that expository texts are often based in textbooks, news articles, instruction manuals, and recipes. The feeling while I read an expository texts seems to sound more complicated and professional for me. Additionally, noticing a expository texts will include factual and explanation of informations. On the other hand, narrative structures is to reveal the author’s feeling or telling a story. Basically, expository is to give informations while narrative is trying to tell a story.

  • What does the word inquiry mean to YOU?

The word “inquiry” simply personally mean question to me. But “inquiry” can mean different link of terms that are still connected to the word “question” . To prove this, here are some example, it can mean  seeking for  informations by asking questions,  interrogation, questioning. It means searching to trustable or realistic answer for the question you are researching.

  • What are the characteristics of an effective team?

Working in team can be a good idea to build a successful expectation of a product and while working on the product, we can socialize. But first, we got to have an effective and tight team to accomplish in our goal for our product, characteristics that will help building an effective team must have a good level of collaboration and communication. Importantly, these two factors are a must need characteristics in the team  because before we can create a product, we should communicate on the expectations of the product. If the members of the team were having difficulties communicating, then this will be hard for them to share each others ideas. After a good communication between members, they will lead to foundation. This will predict how they will interact and understand on what job they’re focusing. Therefore, meaningful common purpose is part of the effective team characteristics because this will make sure that  contributors understand to their team’s purpose. An effective team must be motivated in doing their personal and specific jobs. If one of the members have lack of trust on other members in their group, this will decrease the effectiveness of the the team as they won’t agree and share their good ideas, they must be working in team work and have an equal amount of work for every members of the team.

  • Do expectations make a difference?

The answer is YES, because expectations mean that person or a team is prepared on what their purpose is on. Expectations do make a person accomplish. Expectation give higher chance to succeed. The higher the expectation is, the higher the work will be done success and better. Even more, they do help members keep track on focusing their work.

  • What factors do you consider when evaluating a website?

I considered that these factors evaluate a website which are the author of the website, appearance of the website, currency, purpose of the site and informations. Author of the website is important because this will effect everything in the website if the author is being bias or giving false informations. Technically, professional authors will likely be more reliable than a random author. Websites such as Wikipedia and Yahoo Answers tend to be available for random users to edit the site, meaning that they can give their own opinions on information even though it’s not the reality. You can figure it out if it’s a government website or an educational website by looking at the end of the website’s url. Examples: .gov, .edu., .org, etc.  Other than this factor, the appearance of the website must look professional to show how professional the author is and they really put effort on creating it. Another factor is when was the website created and last updated. This is important because informations can change throughout the time, noticing the last updated date will show if the author has update to the current information. The purpose of the site shows what’s the focus of the site. The last factor is the website is easy to use or it’s too complicated to do research on. If it’s too complicated, the audiences might have difficulties find information from the website that lead to an less effective site. The informations must be easy to find in the website.

  • How can you find the information that you need?

Creating a presentation or other works that you need to contain information, but what if you’re not sure about the informations your focusing on or curious about it, there’s a way to find tons of good and effective informations that can fulfil into your research topic. Currently,  internet is the most common use for researchers these days. Internet is a global system that link to  billion devices worldwide. Amazingly, it contain tons of informations that will succeed you during doing researching, but there’s still some uneffective site that will worsen your project because some websites have bias and opinion and it’s a false informations leading you to collect false informations if you’re not carefully check if the site has all the factors that evaluate the website. Based on this, a popular website is called Google where you click on search and then type in on what you’re focusing on you project. Other than website, there’s another sources that you can collect informations, from books.

  • What does it take to be an effective communicator?

Effective Communication can lead two or more people to exchange informations and opinions. However, there are several factors that will lead communicators to become a better communicator. Initially, being confident will build speakers into an effective communicator because this factor will bring out the speaker’s informations to others. If they’re not confident, they’ll be scared to share their opinion because they thinks that other will judge them or what so ever. But it’s important to show their thinkings rather than keeping it inside, it might be a great ideas for other people. Secondly, listening while communicate is a must, the simple reason is there’s no way to exchange informations or ideas if other people are not listening to the speaker causing rudeness and there’s no informations collected. While explaining your informations, it’s a good idea to encourage or emphasize your topic to let the listeners receive your informations and give feedback. Emphasize informations can make the listener notice which part of the communication is important and to be focus on.

  • How does what you learned in this unit connect to the real world?

I’ve learned a lot from this unit as I get to learn new things such as what are the factors that evaluating a website. These factors help me remind to check the update date and be sure that the website I’m doing research on is reliable. The reason that these factors are connected to the real world is because while I’m doing research on a topic, specifically, on the internet, which is part of the real world. Furthermore, as I’m doing my project for school, I can personally use these factors to figure out if the website is trustable or effective. For an example from the real world, while I was doing research for LA for Traveling project, These useful factors keep me on track on finding an professional author because there are some traveling website with random user that gave their own opinion to the top 10 cities and nature places to visit.

  • Evidence (Images, Essays, Reports, Posters, etc.)

  • Reflection on Evidence
    • Learned the Most, Most Interesting, Most Difficult, Most Progress

I’ve been doing research on the top 10 beautiful nature places to visit and I ‘ve learned the most from it. I’ve learned where to travel that was made by mother nature. An example from the project was the the top 1 nature place is the Lake Hillier, Australia with its pink colored lake.

  • Why was this the most…?

This was the most I've learned because I get to do deep and a lot of researches of the top 10 nature places. I learned each informations for each 10 places. I never know that the largest cave in the world is called Son doong, located in Vietnam and Lake Hillier, Australia existed.
