CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS

UNIT OVERVIEW

 For students to learn the properties of chemical compounds. They will determine the importance of certain chemical compounds that are used in everyday life. The students will to identify characteristics of certain chemical compounds and have an understanding of how they are used throughout the world.  

 

PERSONAL ARCHIEVEMENTS

I’m proud that I learned a lot  of chemical compounds in this lesson from my classmate’s posters.. I did ascorbic acid as known as vitamin C for my poster project. Also, I really had fun going around the school searching for chemical compounds such as caffeine(coffee), salad & fruits bar(ascorbic acid), etc. I learned how to convert mass of each element from the  recipes activity.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING

Chemical formula is a formula for chemistry to express the proportions of atoms that form by a particular chemical compound. They are included with chemical element symbols, numbers, and symbols of each compound. Importantly, the ratios of chemical formula have to be accurate for each elements. Anyway, percent mass is used to express a component in a mixture. The equation of percent mass is mass of element/total mass of compound x 100.

 

 

Demonstrates the understanding of chemical compounds:

I think I did pretty well on understanding chemical compounds. I know the definition of it, which it is combination of 2 or more separate elements. Chemical compound does require chemical formula to form itself with an accurate ratio.

This the standard I still needs to improve on memorizing the equation for percentage mass. In the future, I can plan to improve this part by practicing using the equation to get familiar with it.

Evidence of Work

 

Chemical Compounds are important in all places in the world because it's what we use everyday that can benefits our lives. The examples of beneficial compounds is water because we need to stay hydrated. Even in school, we need water to stay hydrated and healthy to be able to learn!

In this project, I searched for chemical compound around the school. Consequently, we found lots of them including:

Compounds Around the School

Since ascorbic acid or vitamin C was discovered, the world had improved in death rate because people started to know the health benefits from this molecule. Specifically, centuries ago before vitamin C was found, Scurvy rate is very high because they tend to left out fresh foods that contain packs of vitamin C from their diet. If vitamin C wasn’t discovered, the death rate will continuously increase because the world will not know the causes of deadly disease such as “Scurvy”.

The importance behind ratios

The ratio is important for all chemical coumpounds because a accurate ratio for all same chemical compound will determine the correct mass of the compound. If the ratio of the chemical compound is inaccurate, then the compound's mass will mess up as well. You probably don't want to drink a inaccurate ratio water as it might harm your body.
