The State and Democracy

What is a state?

A state is the organisation that issues and enforces binding rules for the people within a territory. States collect taxes, provide school and highways, wage wars, control the opening hours of shops, regulate the sale of alcohol and cigarettes, and promote economic growth. Their responsibility is to improve the services for the young and old, the sick and disabled, and the poor and unemployed. State have power or sovereignty  over people and its territory. As in their territory, it means land, water, and air territory. There are different ways of how state works such as transformation, it’s a gradual transformation of mostly medieval monarchies. Unification of independent, but dispersed political units, i.e.Germany and Italy. Last, Secession, it’s  a break-up of independent political units.

Why is democracy such a popular form of government?

Democracy is a form of government because the definition of democracy is the rule of people, so the citizens participate equally. Democracy can elect the country’s representatives, it offers constitution, the human rights. Democracy gives power and responsibility to the government. It keeps the population under control. Democracy in government promotes them to represent freedom, and provide dignity to the people. This also help solve the conflict in government.

How does what we learned connect to the real world?

I think that this lesson that we learned about state and democracy are connected to the real world because in this real world, each country have its own government and state that have the form of democracy to promote rights. Every countries have different form of democracy, some are stable and some aren't. Some countries in the real world have small territory and some have large territory.

This piktochart project on understanding states was not really challenging because I’m creative person and it’s easy for me to create a visual project on piktochart. I learned about the youngest, oldest, poorest, and richest states. I also learned what characteristics do they have in common. This project teaches me
