Our Mural Progress

We started our mural painting on March 21st-25th, during the Phuket field trip which I was not planning on attending. Here’s the schedule of what we did:

21st March: 8-11am

We drew a grid onto the wall with the chalk liner. The chalk liner is very handy for us to draw the 50X50cm grid; it only took us an hour. If we didn’t have this equipment, we would spend at least two hours to draw a straight line grid by hand with a ruler. Therefore, the grid helps us to draw the sketch easier onto a large proportional scale. After we drew the 50X50 cm grid onto the wall, we started to sketch our jungle themed design. On the first day of our 20 Time project, we finished the grid, but we not the entire sketch. We did, however, manage to sketch the world, a bee, and some flowers. A special thanks to Mr. Joey for helping us to prep our mural!

23rd March: 8-11am

On the second day, Natalie, Mr.Joey, and I continued to sketch the remainder of our mural. While, volunteers Jenny and Nina painted the completed drawings. We finished sketching after two hours and Jenny and Nina were able to complete the painting of the world. We began to then paint the rest of the mural. I chose to paint a part that didn’t require mixed colors. I painted the bee and the flowers since it only required base color like yellow, black, and orange.

25th March:8-11am /15-17pm

We considered that this day was our half way through the progress of the mural. Mr.Joey, Nina, Natalie and I paint all the base colored sketches. It took us 3 hours to paint all the sketches that required only the base color. Unfortunately, the time was up, but Natalie and I decided to come after school from 15-17pm to paint the mural. Consequently, we still remain some part of the mural that need to be painted such as the grasses and the second giraffe. Thank you to all the volunteers who help us working with our mural.

3rd April:10am-3pm

I and Natalie went back to the nursery to continue painting our mural, on this day we are left with the grass and second giraffe.

The problems and plans:

In three days, we were able to get more than halfway through our 20-time mural. Unfortunately, there were some issues; for example, we couldn’t reach the top part of the mural even though we used the ladder. Eventually, we solved the problem by asking the staff there to paint the top part of the wall. Another issue was that we had a hard time organizing the schedule since we weren’t sure if when we would be free. But we tried to set up dates to paint, especially on weekend mornings since I’m quite busy in the afternoon. Also, on the third day of painting, I accidentally dropped a paint can as I carry it back to the storage room. The bag ripped because the paint was too heavy. Luckily, the paint spilled only in the plastic bag, so we poured the paint back into the bucket. Anyway, we seem to be successful on this project as we didn’t mess up any of the walls yet and we still have enough paint left and the wall looks so much better than before. My plan for the next 3 weeks is to be finished by April 10th. After we finish painting the mural, we will be preparing for the Ted Talk in May. Therefore, we will be practicing our speech and create a presentation with pictures before the day of the Ted Talk.
